Shaun Evaristo & G-Dragon, Breathe

shaun g-dragon

Okay, so while it’s still up in the air whether or not Shaun did do Tae Yang‘s new song, he did do the choreography for G-Dragon‘s latest music video, “Breathe“.

He posted on his twitter, “GD MV i did is out.

So you can thank him for giving GD such awesome choreography. Check it out.

I wonder if they have Shaun do all of GD‘s choreo as he releases his songs out one by one. We’ll just have to wait and see.

YG Entertainment responds: G-Dragon’s case

yg

So YG Entertainment finally responds to all those lowly accusations of plagiarism. And well, we’re not gonna copy and paste the whole thing so you’re gonna have to read it on allkpop. What we will do though is take excerpts and plant our little comments after them.

Where does YG stand in this plagiarism issue?
In my opinion, all the arguments and discussions could be seen different depending on the views and the viewers. So, I cannot explain my personal opinion of whether it was influenced by other songs or not.

However, in the centre of attention, there is “Heartbreaker”. This issue emerged above the surface because it had similar rap-flow as Flo Rida’s “Right Round”. Right Round is an extremely famous song even in Korea, and recently another Korean artist has sung it with translation, and appeared on the media. It is impossible that the composers at YG and G-Dragon tried to go around their way to plagiarise. It is impossible, because with the internet and all, everything gets revealed quickly.

Many expressed their concerns, “Why did G-Dragon do this? For the rappers who write and rap, it shouldn’t be hard to fix a few verses and re-recording”, and “How come did Yang Hyun-Seok, Teddy, Perry and Kush never mention that to G-Dragon?” It isn’t because we were trying to fool the public, but the other way around. I did not expect such a stir among the public, and I think I should be 100 folds more responsible than G-Dragon as the executive producer. I am truly sorry to G-Dragon and his fans who are burdened alone.

Okay one, as much as I love YG and G-Dragon, can they honestly say it’s pure coincidence that the bgm, melody and rhyme are exactly the same? He said it himself that Right Round is very popular in Korea, so the chances of them not hearing this song on several occasions is highly unlikely. Also, how can they not expect that type of stir from the public? G-Dragon personally put up the 30 second sample on his me2day, especially that part. Why that part? He couldn’t put the chorus? And while I feel for Yang Hyun-Seok taking full responsibility, G-Dragon is at fault because with his musicality, he should have known that the sample he put online is the same exact sample from another song.

There are sayings that this issue is part of the marketing for YG.
First of all, YG is not that clever to come up with a marketing plan like this. Especially for G-Dragon, he was receiving enough attention as the leader of a famous idol group in Korea, and for releasing his ever-first solo album. He is even cutting off the appearance on the stage…

I laugh at this because that’s an insult to his marketing department. If you were in YG‘s marketing department wouldn’t you feel insulted at the fact that he just called you incompetent? While our previous posts do say that we wouldn’t be surprised if it was a marketing ploy, we still wouldn’t put it past anyone there. The industry is shady, the workers are smart they just hide it. One can inadvertently come up with something like this situation as a marketing ploy and not even realize it. It happens to everyone, they say something, its done, but then at the same time they don’t even realize what was done.

I’m sure GD thought it would be harmless to release that sample, especially as a gift to his fans to get a taste. But this ‘sample‘, that ‘teaser‘, in essence is subliminal marketing. One release’s samples to get the fans hyped, to get new people to listen; in the end it’s marketing – promoting.

While there is a lot more to the statement that YG released, I’m only touching basis on these two points. Why? Because for the most part I agree with YG in his statement.

We’re not saying that YG and GD did plagiarize, because we don’t think they did. But we do keep an open mind and need to play devil’s advocate. Not everything is black and white when it comes to the entertainment industry. People and fans alike need to realize that there are always two sides to a story, and while we have our opinions, our job is to report and let you, the readers come up with your own conclusions.

Shaun Evaristo and TaeYang

shaun evaristo tae yang

While G-Dragon is s-l-o-w-l-y doing his solo, best bud Tae Yang is making his solo come back with a digital single called, “WHERE U AT”.  This will be Tae Yang‘s first full album. His first mini album that was released last year only had a small slot for promotions, so YG Entertainment is hoping to make promotions for this album a long lasting one.

What does Shaun Evaristo have to do with this? While everyone else is reporting on awesome choreographer, Rino from Beat Freaks (SNSDs’ Genie, f(x)s’ La chA TA), they are forgetting that Shaun is one of the most talented choreographers and is wanted… by YG. While they haven’t officially announced that Shaun choreographed Tae Yang‘s new single, “WHERE U AT”, it’s not a long shot since Shaun twittered last week that he was off to Korea to do some work.  If you aren’t so sure, Shaun also did the choreography to Big Bang‘s “Number One” and G-Dragon‘s Heartbreaker dance.

Since Shaun did the crime, Tae Yang will do the time, and I can’t wait to see what the choreo looks like.

G-Dragon, Big Bang and 2NE1 scrutinized for plagiarism?

big band 2ne1

Ooo the YG Family is in trouble… it is never a dull day in K-Pop.

One of the big scandals last month was whether or not G-Dragon is a plagiarizer. His songs “Heartbreaker” and “Butterfly” are said to have been “plagiarized” because they resemble Flo rida’s “Right Round” and Oasis’ “She’s Electric”.

Not only that, but Big Bang‘s “With U” and 2NE1‘s “I don’t Care” is said to carry the same weight with Lionel Richie’s “Just Go”.

ATV Music Publishing, the South Korean branch of Sony, announced their decision on the matter. On Korean show, Current Affairs Magazine 2580, reported that Sony officials sent YG Entertainment letters containing a warning regarding these issues.

“It was a hard decision for the music critics. However, they decided that there were similarities and accordingly issued a warning letter to the production company and composers. They have also denied YG Entertainment the permission to promote these songs,”* said a Sony legal representative.

YG Entertainment has yet to release an official statement in regards to the matter.

Well one things for sure, YG sure knows how to stay in the media.

For some of us, this is being blown a bit more out of proportion. There are many songs that recycle in every country. J-Pop has been to have these same “similarities” (PENICILLIN‘s “fantasia” to No Doubts’ “Spider Webs”). America’s own LMFAO’s “La La La” sounds similar to Big Bang‘s “Haru Haru” and “Lies” with a bit of remixing. There are many songs here in America that recycle beats over and over again, and I’m sure not all of them asked permission either.

Sometimes netizens just need to keep things to themselves or at least not make such a big deal out of things. Because if things get even more messier for G-Dragon and the YG Family, we might just see something similar to Jay Park, and it will be the netizen’s at fault… again.

G-Dragon & 2NE1 on iTunes Japan

g-dragon 2ne1

Big Bang‘s official Japanese blog announced that G-Dragon‘s “Heartbreaker”, and 2NE1‘s “The First Mini Album” is available on iTunes Japan.

This is great news for Japanese fans and great news for both G-Dragon and 2NE1. Neither artist has debuted in Japan yet and already they are available on iTunes. I know some of you are thinking that G-Dragon has debuted in Japan already, and he has with Big Bang, but not as a solo artist.

G-Dragon is already hitting Japan, look out for his interview that was on 9/19 on KBOOM.

I’m sure YG Japan is working really hard to get to have both artists debut in Japan. Maybe well see 2NE1 in Japan by next year, but I’m hoping they’ll make a pit stop in L.A. first. It should be interesting, at least Minzy ‘speaks’ Japanese.
